Job Description: Public Works Laborer
A Public Works Laborer in Wyoming Borough plays an essential role in supporting the construction, maintenance, and overall operations managed by the Public Works Department. This position primarily centers on road maintenance, but also includes responsibilities in park upkeep, storm and sanitary sewer maintenance, stream maintenance, and other related areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a range of Borough-owned vehicles, including pick-up trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, dump trucks, salt spreaders, snowplows, and other equipment as required.
- Utilize power tools and equipment such as mowers, chain saws, and air compressors when necessary.
- Inspect and repair equipment following department procedures and perform repairs to Borough roads, curbs, and sidewalks as needed.
- Mow grass, prune trees, and plant flowers and trees in designated areas.
- Clean Borough offices, garage areas, park facilities, and perform general litter cleanup and trash removal.
- Maintain sanitary and storm sewers, including conducting repairs and routine maintenance.
- Sweep and clear debris and materials from roads, as well as remove snow and ice, which includes manual shoveling.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Pennsylvania State driver’s license.
- Ability to operate Borough-owned vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoes, snowplows, salt spreaders, power tools, chain saws, and air compressors.
- Capacity to understand and follow written and oral instructions and to work independently.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy objects and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strict adherence to safety procedures and practices, including the use of safety equipment.
- Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with co-workers and the public.
- Availability for 24-hour emergency callouts, including incidents like snowfall, floods, downed trees, and sewer main blockages.
- Knowledge of a range of semi-skilled maintenance tasks.
